Starting Strong works to support parents and families in being their best by sharing the most important information available on what they can do to support their child. From reading with your child every day, to finding the right help when something goes wrong, Starting Strong is working with the community to grow your support.
FIRST4ME Portland
Parents are invited to participate in a new pilot program in Portland called First4ME, which was developed to support children in early childcare and their families. Benefits to families who participate include:
You will receive stipends for participating in some First4ME surveys, coaching, and other activities
Your child will have more support with routine screenings, as well as tools, activities, and experiences that help prepare them for kindergarten
Your child and family can receive social-emotional support with a licensed mental health clinician to help navigate challenging circumstances
Trained family coaches for eligible families will:
Help identify your family’s goals and give you support to achieve them
Foster family and school connections
Assist you to more easily connect with different settings and supports such as public pre-K or kindergarten, health care and early intervention providers, and more
Talking is Teaching: Tips to talk, read, and sing to your child every day
“Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing” is a national public awareness and action campaign that empowers parents and caregivers with fun and easy ways to improve their babies’ learning, from birth to age five. Starting Strong – with the help of over a dozen community partners – has been implementing the national ‘Talking is Teaching’ campaign. This campaign provides fun tips on how to use everyday activities to talk, read, and sing with your young beginning at birth in order to help your child thrive in school and beyond.

Tips are organized by age (Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers) and are intended to help parents and families support their children’s social and emotional development–nurturing children’s ability to develop healthy relationships, manage challenges and realize their full potential. Click to Download
